Enhancing Local Government Biosecurity Capability

About the Project:

The Enhancing Local Government Biosecurity Capability (ELGBC) Project, delivered by UP North, assessed and strengthened biosecurity operations across five remote and regional councils: Cook Shire, Mareeba Shire, Carpentaria Shire, Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire, and Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire.

The project was initiated to assess and strengthen the biosecurity readiness and operational capacity of five local governments across South-Western Cape York.

The project evaluated on ground biosecurity operations, response mechanisms, and data management tools, with a strong focus on regional collaboration and shared capability development. It also identified significant opportunities to build digital mapping systems, coordinate ranger programs, and enhance the integration of Traditional Owner knowledge and local priorities into biosecurity strategies.

Through five network meetings, targeted council consultations, and detailed capability surveys, the ELGBC project developed a roadmap for improving surveillance, outbreak response, and regional partnerships ensuring a more consistent and proactive approach to invasive species and biosecurity risks
